How to Check Back Links

Knowing how to check backlinks can be an effective way to find new places to get links for your website.

Using the FireFox browser (free download) and the Firebug add on (also free), is an easy way to view the link source on a page to identify whether or not a link uses "follow" or "nofollow" in the HTML code, which tells search engines like Google whether to count it or not count it to factor in Page Rank or link popularity.

Once Firefox / Firebug have been used to view the source code for a link, another step can be taken, which is to use a backlink checker tool on sites such as Iwebtool.com

Simply enter the URL for a site and click on "Check Back Links".

The other day I published an article regarding web design for a lawyer / attorney. Well, let's say you were going to do SEO for a law firm's office and you then had the task of finding or advising them on places to advertise, in an effort to increase page rank through hard-coded links using keyword text.

If you do a search for back links to a competing attorney's site (that ranks high in search), such as http://perrymason.com/ (hypothetically speaking), you'll see a number of websites listed that he's appearing on.

This guy has managed to score a number of paid links that apparently are hard-coded so that search engines will pick them up.

How much he's paying for these ads we have no clue until we contact the website he's appearing on and ask them for their ad rates.

Using the same approach, you should contact the sites your competitor is showing up on, and ask for ad rates. You don't necessarily need to show up on as many pages as your competitor (if they're paying for a site wide ad), especially if you can buy some hard-coded links (ads) on a few different sites.

In an effort to do SEO for this law firm, you should do some searches for attorneys in various large cities, taking note of the law firms showing up high in the natural search results of Google.

Then go to the link above to use the backlink checker tool and check each law firms' back links.

A few of these sites that appear could be great places for you to contact. Whether you're a law firm, a construction contractor, or a competing web designer doesn't matter: The rules for checking back links are the same.
