Copywriting for the Web: Turn Your Site into a Money Maker with Strong Copywriting By Kenneth Wilson, WiredBusinessDesign.com. Copyright © 2011. All rights reserved. If you're on the web and your goal is to earn a living through your website, the word "copywriting" is one you should become more and more familiar with.
Copywriting is the process of choosing titles, headlines, descriptive text, and sales text in order to create interest in a product or service. Skilled copywriting can generate strong interest and an immediate sale.
Copywriting doesn't only apply to selling a product, however. Great copywriting can inspire people to take action right now for a political cause, or simply rallying a group of friends to get together for a vacation. "Fill out the form below and a representative will be in touch shortly." "Donate now and help feed a needy family. It only takes a moment." "This is in a `once in a lifetime vacation`. Book by 6pm today and get a 30% discount on hotel. Call right now with your credit card." Those lines are simple calls to action, to use sparingly alongside text that highlights the strengths of your product. Your writing should be crisp, clean, and professional. "The views of the beach outside the hotel in Tahiti are incredible. You will never forget the sun, sand, and sky. Once we get your passenger information, we can choose the best hotel room. Please enter the names and ages of the people traveling with you in the form below and press submit." That's an example of another call to action.
What you see in the examples above are repeated calls to action. You're not trying to hammer your customers with a cheesy "BUY RIGHT NOW AND HIT THE JACKPOT" sales pitch, what you are trying to do is continue to motivate the customer to take steps toward making a sale.
The title of your product, service, or webpage can generate immediate interest in what you offer. Choosing the right title could turn your product into the next "Dr. Pepper" or "Air Jordan" basketball shoe. Choosing the wrong title can make your product seem boring and nothing of genuine interest. Put some thought into the title. While coming up with new, creative, and catchy names for things can come easy to some people, a challenge occurs when we try to use this title in the name of our dotcom website. So many domain names have been purchased over the last few years that many names that may first come to mind are taken. Do some brainstorming, and look at the titles of other products or services in your industry, and see if any of these might help bring some ideas to your head.
Strongly consider that one of your goals is to be found in Google search, and so -- if possible -- try to come up with a name that includes one or more keywords that people would likely search for to find the kind of product you offer.
